Johnny Cash: The Last Great American

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Johnny Cash's life gets the retrospective treatment here, tracing the arc from a childhood picking cotton in Dyess, Arkansas to the Sun Records sessions that put him alongside Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis. The film follows the highs, the Folsom Prison concert, the marriage to June Carter, and the lows, the pill addiction and years of commercial decline, before landing on the late-career revival built with producer Rick Rubin on the American Recordings albums. It closes on Unearthed, the box set retrospective Cash finished shortly before his death in 2003. Archival performance footage and interviews carry the biography, charting how a Baptist preacher's son became country music's outlaw conscience and then, decades later, a stripped-down elder statesman singing Nine Inch Nails and Trent Reznor covers. The throughline is reinvention: a man who kept finding a new audience every time the old one seemed to have moved on, right up to the recordings he made knowing they would be his last.
