Cosmologist Brian Thomas Swimme and Yale historian of religions Mary Evelyn Tucker trace the 13.8-billion-year history of the universe, from the formation of galaxies and stars to the emergence of life on Earth and the rise of human consciousness. Filmed on location in Greece, among other sites, with Swimme narrating directly to camera against ruins and landscapes, the film moves through astronomy, geology, and biology, connecting supernova explosions to the elements in human bodies and the collapse of ancient civilizations to questions about ecological limits today. Interviews with scientists and scholars fill out the picture, but the throughline is Swimme's argument that understanding cosmic and biological history changes how people should think about their responsibility to the planet. Produced by an Emmy-winning team, the film pairs cosmology with an explicitly humanistic reading of what that cosmology means, treating the scientific story of the universe as material for reflection rather than just data. It ends less as a science lecture than as an argument for a particular way of seeing humanity's place in it.
