Julian Assange walked free on June 25, 2024, after years of imprisonment and legal battles over WikiLeaks' publications. Turkish journalist Can Dündar, himself once imprisoned for his reporting and now exiled in Germany, and co-director Sarah Mabrouk spent six months tracing the case before that release, focusing not on Assange's public persona but on "Collateral Murder," the 2007 video showing a US Apache helicopter crew killing journalists and Iraqi civilians in Baghdad. Dündar travels from Iceland to the US to Iraq, locating one of only two survivors of the attack, a boy who was ten at the time, and a US soldier who took part in it, then brings the two together for the first time seventeen years later. He also follows Assange's wife Stella and their children on a final visit to Belmarsh prison and into Britain's High Court. The film sets the soldiers' internal investigation, which led to no charges, against Assange's unprecedented prosecution for publishing what the video revealed.
