Justice: A Cross The Universe
Justice, the French electronic duo behind "D.A.N.C.E." and "Cross," spend three weeks crossing the United States in March 2008, and directors Romain Gavras and So-Me, both friends of the band, film what happens between the shows rather than the shows themselves. One full concert makes the cut, recorded at San Francisco's Concourse Exhibition Center on March 27, 2008, but most of the runtime tracks the tour bus, the hotel rooms, and the strange fan encounters that pile up over eighteen months on the road. There is no narrator and no talking-head structure explaining what any of it means; the camera simply stays close to Xavier de Rosnay and Gaspard Augé as they move through a country that keeps producing odd, unscripted moments. The film was released alongside a live album of the same name, and it treats the concert footage as one ingredient among several rather than the point of the project. What it leaves you with is closer to a tour diary than a music documentary.
