K2 rises just over 28,000 feet on the border of Pakistan and China, second only to Everest in height but far ahead of it in death rate, a ratio that has earned the peak its nickname, the Savage Mountain. This film follows the climbers who attempt its summit, using archival expedition footage and firsthand accounts to show what makes the route so lethal: sheer ice faces, sudden storms, and a summit push that leaves almost no margin for error. Interviews with survivors and the families of those who did not return sit alongside footage of the Bottleneck, the narrow, avalanche-prone couloir just below the top where many of the mountain's worst disasters have unfolded. The film treats the mountain less as scenery than as an adversary, tracking why experienced climbers keep returning to a peak with one of the highest fatality rates of any eight-thousander on earth. It ends without resolving the question driving its subjects: whether the risk is ever worth what the summit gives back.
