In southern Utah's red rock country, seven miles west of St. George, a 2,000-acre planned community called Kayenta sits inside protected desert land. The film traces its origins to developer Terry Marten, who came across the site in 1968 and pushed a design philosophy built around moderate land use and homes meant to sit low against the terrain rather than dominate it. What began as a hard sell to skeptical buyers has grown into more than 500 houses, many built by architects who treat the rock formations and sightlines as part of the floor plan. Interviews with residents cover why they left cities for the desert, and with the artists the community has attracted, drawn by the same 360-degree views and shifting light the architecture is built to frame. Zion, Snow Canyon, and Bryce Canyon National Parks sit within view of the property, and the film uses that proximity to show a place designed around its landscape instead of against it.
