Tobias Schneebaum is turning 80 when this film catches up with him, decades after he walked into the Peruvian jungle in 1955 and lived among the Harakmbut, an experience that reportedly included ritual cannibalism during an intertribal raid. He later wrote a memoir about it, also called Keep the River on Your Right, and became a minor celebrity as the artist who crossed a line most people only imagine. Filmmakers David Shapiro and Laurie Gwen Shapiro travel with the elderly, openly gay Schneebaum back to Peru and on to New Guinea, where he lived with the Asmat people, retracing the encounters that shaped his life and art. Interviews with Schneebaum himself, disarmingly candid about violence, sex, and belonging, sit alongside footage of the villages and rivers he first saw as a young man. The film treats him less as a shock subject than as a genuinely strange life fully lived, curious to the end about what drove him into those jungles in the first place.
