Jack Kevorkian walks out of a Michigan prison in June 2007 after serving eight years of a 10-to-25-year sentence for second-degree murder, on parole with one condition: he can never again advise anyone on how to die. The pathologist known to the press as Dr. Death had spent the 1990s publicly assisting terminally ill patients in ending their lives, claiming more than 130 cases before his conviction, and famously arguing that "dying is not a crime." This film picks up where the trial left off, following his final years as he returns to public life as a right-to-die advocate, oil painter, and jazz musician, selling his artwork and music while continuing to press the case he went to prison for. It treats him less as a criminal defendant than as a man testing, in his last chapter, whether the country's view of assisted suicide had shifted at all since the charges that put him away.
