King Arthur's story has survived a thousand years of retelling, but the film asks whether any of it touches real history. Archaeologists trace the legend back through medieval chronicles to a possible Dark Age warlord, then follow the physical search for Camelot itself. The centerpiece is Leslie Alcock's 1960s excavation of Cadbury Hill in Somerset, a site locals had linked to Arthur for centuries, where new techniques uncovered evidence of a fortified stronghold occupied in the right period. The film walks through what the digs actually found, earthworks, timber halls, signs of a defended hilltop settlement, and weighs that evidence against the gap between a real regional leader and the armored, chivalric king of later romance. Historians and archaeologists lay out competing candidates for the historical Arthur and explain how a possibly minor war leader got inflated into a national myth. The result treats the legend seriously without pretending the physical evidence settles the question.
