In Rio de Janeiro's favelas, kids turn kite flying into a contest of skill and nerve, coating string with ground glass and paste to cut down rivals' kites from rooftops and alleys. The film follows young fliers as they build and fly their kites, treating the sport as both a neighborhood pastime and a stand-in for status and territory in crowded, close-packed streets. Interviews and observational footage show the craft behind the kites themselves, how the cutting line is prepared, and the improvised rules that govern who wins a match when a line is severed and a kite drifts loose over the rooftops. Rather than treating the favela as a backdrop for crime or poverty, the film stays close to this one recreation, letting the kids explain what the fights mean to them and what it takes to be good at it. It is a small, specific look at how a simple toy becomes a serious contest.
