King Philip IV of France, deep in debt to the Templars, orchestrated their arrest on charges of heresy, and the film follows the trials, the forced confessions, and the execution of Grand Master Jacques de Molay that ended the order in 1312. It also weighs the persistent legends that followed, including claims about hidden treasure and the order's supposed survival underground, against what the surviving records actually show. Historians and period footage of Templar sites in France and the Levant anchor the account throughout.
