Knock Down the House

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Four women run for Congress in 2018 with no political machine behind them. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez waits tables in the Bronx while challenging ten-term incumbent Joe Crowley, the fourth-ranking Democrat in the House. Amy Vilela campaigns in Nevada carrying the death of her daughter, who was denied care over an insurance question, into every stump speech. Cori Bush, a nurse and pastor in Ferguson, Missouri, ties her run to the protests that followed Michael Brown's killing. Paula Jean Swearengin runs against the coal industry in West Virginia, the state that shaped her. Director Rachel Lears follows all four through fundraising calls, door-knocking, debate prep, and election-night rooms, cutting between their campaigns rather than favoring one. The film spends real time on Justice Democrats and Brand New Congress, the groups recruiting first-time candidates to challenge safe incumbents, and on the money and endorsements arrayed against them. Only one race ends in a win, and the film sits with the other three losses as long as it does with that victory.
