La Mer de Pianos: The Oldest Piano Shop in Paris
Marc Manceaux runs La Mer de Pianos, the oldest piano shop in Paris, a cramped workshop stacked with keys, hammers, and cast-iron frames salvaged from instruments other dealers would scrap. The film follows him at the bench and on buying trips, sorting through old piano parts he keeps on hand to bring damaged or forgotten instruments back into working order. He talks about how he got into the trade, what draws him to pianos with decades of history already built into their wood and wire, and why he would rather rebuild an old instrument than sell a new one. Interviews with Manceaux are mixed with close shots of his hands working on hammers, strings, and soundboards, giving a sense of a craft that depends on patience and a stock of parts nobody else bothers to keep. It is a short, plainly told portrait of one man's trade and the instruments that pass through his hands.
