Two short films sit back to back here, both circling America's relationship with firearms. The first, Gun by Gun, follows an initiative that treats gun violence less as a law-enforcement problem and more as a public-health one, tracking outreach workers who intervene with people at risk of shooting or being shot before police ever get involved. The second profiles Mel, a private citizen who has amassed what the film calls the largest personal arsenal in the country, all of it legally acquired under loose state gun laws. Cameras follow him through his collection and out to his own property, where he fires weapons that would be heavily restricted almost anywhere else in the world. Interviews with Mel sit alongside footage of the guns themselves, letting his justification for owning that much firepower speak for itself. Together the two segments frame the same national debate from opposite ends, one focused on stopping violence at street level, the other on the culture that makes an arsenal like Mel's possible in the first place.
