Kira, 17, came out to her parents as a girl five years earlier, just before puberty would have deepened her voice and grown facial hair. Her mother recalls the family's dilemma: agree to medical intervention, or wait and risk it being only a phase, with harm possible either way. Filmmaker Renate Werner follows Kira and two other families through that decision, sitting with the adolescents as they explain what led them to identify as trans and with the parents as they weigh hormone treatments and surgeries against the psychological toll of doing nothing. Researchers and clinicians working in the still-developing field of trans health add context on what is and isn't known about how to distinguish a lasting trans identity from adolescent experimentation with gender roles. The film does not resolve the dilemma so much as sit inside it, showing three sets of parents reaching different conclusions under the same uncertainty, with the adolescents' own voices given equal weight to the adults deciding on their behalf.
