Life Inside Kerobokan

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Bali's Kerobokan Prison sits a few miles from the island's resort strip, and this film goes inside its walls to show the gap between the two worlds. Built to hold a few hundred inmates, the prison houses far more, and cells, corridors, and courtyards are shown crowded with prisoners serving time for drug offenses, theft, and violent crime alongside foreign tourists caught up in Indonesia's strict narcotics laws. Interviews with inmates and staff describe a system running on improvisation: bribes that buy better cells, informal hierarchies among prisoners, and guards stretched thin across a population the facility was never designed to hold. The film follows individual cases to put faces on the statistics, tracing how ordinary travelers and local offenders end up serving years inside the same compound. Corruption, drug smuggling within the prison itself, and the daily negotiations inmates make just to get by all surface through firsthand accounts rather than narration alone. The contrast with Bali's tourist image runs through the whole film without needing to be stated twice.
