Life on the Autism Spectrum (Part 1)
Sebastian, Lena, Diane, and Elias are four people whose lives are shaped by autism, and this film follows them at turning points rather than through clinical explanation. Sebastian searches for a romantic partner, navigating dating with the directness and anxieties that come with being on the spectrum. Lena pursues a medical career despite setbacks that have repeatedly threatened to derail her studies. Diane, meanwhile, works to get her son Elias settled into school, running into obstacles with teachers and systems not built for him. The camera stays close and patient, favoring quiet observation over interviews about diagnosis or symptoms, and the film uses visual touches meant to suggest how its subjects experience the world internally, not just how they appear from outside. There is no narrator explaining autism in the abstract; instead the four stories accumulate into a picture of what everyday ambitions, love, work, belonging, actually require when the path there is uneven. The first of a two-part series.
