Physicist and author Alan Lightman travels from the smallest scales of physics to the largest structures in the universe, using LIGO's detection of gravitational waves as his anchor. The film follows the billion-dollar effort to build an instrument sensitive enough to catch ripples in spacetime predicted by Einstein a century earlier, tracing the engineering problem of measuring a distortion smaller than a proton across kilometers of vacuum tunnel. Lightman meets researchers involved in the project and also sits down with the co-discoverer of one of the most distant galaxies yet found, using that encounter to widen the film's scope beyond LIGO itself. Interviews with working physicists and astronomers sit alongside footage of the detector facilities, and the film keeps circling back to Lightman's real question: what these discoveries about the infinitely small and the infinitely large actually mean for how we understand our own place in the cosmos. It treats the science as a way into a larger, more personal inquiry rather than an end in itself.
