Lasqueti Island sits about an hour from Vancouver by boat, yet it runs on almost none of the infrastructure that city qualifies as normal life. No public electricity grid reaches the island, the roads are unpaved, and many homes still get by without indoor plumbing. The film visits the people who chose this trade-off on purpose, following them through daily routines built around wood stoves, hauled water, solar panels, and gardens that do double duty as grocery stores. Residents explain what pushed them off the mainland and what they gave up to get there, from hot showers to reliable phone service, and what they gained instead, mostly time and quiet. The camera spends time on the practical mechanics of subsistence, chopping firewood, tending livestock, rigging small-scale power, rather than treating the island as a scenic curiosity. It is a plain look at how a self-sufficient community actually functions a short ferry ride from a major Canadian city.
