Wolves have long been cast as bloodthirsty vermin, a reputation conservationists Jamie and Jim Dutcher set out to test by moving into a tented camp in Idaho's Sawtooth wilderness and staying there for six years. They live alongside a single pack, the Sawtooth Pack, close enough to be accepted into its daily routines, and the footage they bring back shows details rarely caught on camera: how pups are raised communally, how rank and affection get worked out inside the group, and how individual wolves respond to the humans camped in their territory. The Dutchers weather forest fires, mountain lions, and winters that drop well below zero to keep filming, and the result was Emmy-nominated for its access alone. The film avoids both the monster myth and easy sentimentality, letting the pack's own behavior, its cooperation, its hierarchy, its evident capacity for play, make the case for a more accurate picture of the animal. It closes as an argument for coexistence built entirely from six years of direct observation.
