Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman get back on their BMW motorcycles for a second transcontinental ride, this time from John o'Groats in Scotland to Cape Town in South Africa. The route runs through Europe, across the Mediterranean, and down the length of Africa, taking in Tunisia, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Malawi before reaching the southern tip of the continent. Cameras ride along as the pair deal with mechanical breakdowns, border crossings, and landmine warnings in the Sudanese desert, while also stopping at UNICEF and Comic Relief projects along the way, including clinics and refugee camps. Local fixers, mechanics, and aid workers appear alongside the two riders, who narrate their own fatigue, arguments, and moments of relief in diary-style pieces to camera. The series keeps its focus on the physical difficulty of the trip and the places it passes through rather than any single dramatic arc, following the two friends as they try to finish what they started on their first ride, and largely succeed.
