Josh Preville spent years as a born-again Pentecostal before becoming an atheist, and this film builds his deconversion out of conversations he records with Christians still inside the faith. Segments cut between those discussions and passages from a letter Preville wrote to his family explaining why he left, along with statistics on issues he says the church gets wrong. A retired psychologist describes performing exorcisms and believing in demonic warfare. Other believers tell Preville they would kill their children if God commanded it, and a Christian father and his atheist son argue the split at their own kitchen table. The film also stops on evolution versus creationism, the separation of church and state, what atheism and agnosticism actually mean, whether prayer can treat mental illness, and gay marriage. There is no outside narrator; Preville himself carries the argument, filming the people who disagree with him and letting their answers stand alongside his own account of why he stopped believing.
