Lost Generation of Sudan
Sudan's Nuba Mountains have been a war zone since 2011, when government forces began a campaign against the region's civilian population that the film's makers call genocide. Tens of thousands of children have fled the fighting, and this film follows their displacement, built from footage supplied by journalists working in Sudan, South Sudan, and Europe rather than a single embedded crew. The focus stays on the children themselves: what they have lost, where they have ended up, and what an interrupted childhood looks like in the middle of an active conflict most outside audiences have never had explained to them. Made by Operation Broken Silence, an organization working on education access for children displaced by the Nuba Mountains fighting, the film treats their situation as urgent and ongoing rather than historical. It is a short, direct account of a crisis still unresolved, with the children who lived through it as its only real subject.
