At Copán, a team of physicists aims a muon detector at the Temple of Inscriptions, using cosmic rays to look for a hidden royal burial chamber inside a pyramid that has stood for 1,200 years. The film follows their scan alongside archaeologists excavating the temple's staircases and altars, where they find evidence of ritual killing tied to Maya beliefs about death and kingship. A second crew drills into a Mexican lakebed for sediment cores that might explain why the great cities emptied out in the 9th century AD, while LIDAR flights over Tikal reveal causeways, terraces, and structures that push the known size of the civilization well beyond earlier estimates. The story moves between Copán, Palenque, and Chichen Itza, tracing how Maya rulers rebuilt their societies after cities collapsed and what treasures and remains might still be sealed inside undiscovered tombs. CGI reconstructions fill in temples and plazas as they would have looked, set against the real dig sites and the scientists working them.
