Louis Theroux's African Hunting Holiday

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

South Africa's trophy hunting industry brings in thousands of paying visitors every year, and Louis Theroux sets out to understand who they are and why they come. He spends time on game ranches where lions and other animals are bred specifically to be shot, meets the ranchers who breed them, and talks to American and European hunters who fly in for the experience, including some hunting with bows. Theroux asks the guides and clients directly why they pay to kill an animal that has been raised in captivity for that purpose, and gets answers ranging from conservation economics to plain enthusiasm for the kill. He also visits a taxidermy operation preparing trophies for export home. Theroux's usual approach carries the film: mild, persistent questioning that lets ranchers and hunters explain themselves at length, often revealing more than they intend about the industry's scale and its uneasy relationship with wildlife conservation.
