In the northern German town of Lüsche, one of Europe's largest equine clinics draws horse owners from around the world, some of whom fly their animals in for treatment. At Frankfurt Airport, horse farmer Vanessa Wilkens receives arriving patients at an Animal Lounge before they're loaded, sometimes three at a time, into narrow transport boxes for the trip onward. The film follows head surgeon Dr. Jan Hein Swagemakers, 63, who also serves as team vet for the German show jumping squad and applies minimally invasive techniques borrowed from human surgery. His specialty is widening a constricted nerve canal in the neck, an operation that lets horses trot and jump again without stumbling or pain. Among the cases is Quiwi, a mare whose owners near the Swiss border see the trip to Lüsche as their last hope. Interviews with Swagemakers, his staff, and clients show a business built on expensive procedures, long-distance transport, and the attachment owners have to animals worth protecting at almost any cost.
