Magic and Wormholes
Brian Swingle, physicist at Brandeis University, presents this Institute for Advanced Study High Energy Theory Seminar on the quantum resource known as magic and its behavior in many-fermion systems. He focuses on the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, showing how the amount of magic calculated there can be reproduced by a gravity calculation involving wormhole geometries in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity coupled to matter. Swingle connects this correspondence to recent holographic models of closed universes, drawing on work with Valerie Bettaque, Martin Sasieta, and Alejandro Vilar-Lopez. The talk moves through the technical machinery of quantum information theory and gravitational path integrals, aimed at researchers already familiar with holography and the SYK model, delivered at the Bloomberg Lecture Hall with the chalkboard derivations and audience questions typical of a working theory seminar.
