The Maldives spreads across more than 1,200 coral islands, some so new or unstable that they have never been formally surveyed, and this film treats the archipelago as a diving destination rather than a beach resort. Underwater footage tracks the reef life that draws divers here: more than 4,000 fish species live on coral reefs worldwide, and over 900 of them turn up in Maldivian waters alone. A good stretch of the film is devoted to sharks, correcting the man-eater reputation by showing what the footage actually documents, most local species feeding on mollusks and small fish rather than anything larger. By day the sharks stay hidden in coral crevices, bodies that can run to three meters tucked out of sight, and come out at night to hunt, often passing within arm's reach of divers without incident. The film also touches on how diving tourism has reshaped the islands' economy alongside the resort trade, but its real focus stays on what is visible just below the surface.
