More than a million Moldovans have left their country to find work abroad, many of them women who cross borders illegally and take jobs cleaning houses or caring for children and the elderly in Italy and Austria. Director Eduard Moschitz follows three of these women over several years, tracking what happens to the families they leave behind and the children raised largely by grandparents or older siblings while their mothers send money home. The film moves between the migrants' cramped lives in foreign cities, where they live with the constant risk of deportation, and the villages in Moldova where their absence reshapes entire households. Interviews with the women themselves carry the film, alongside scenes with the children who grow up mostly through phone calls and remittances. It is a quiet, observational account of what economic desperation costs a family, told through the people living it rather than through statistics or experts.
