MIT Sloan's graduate course applies operations management tools to the service sector, covering both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. Cases and frameworks span health care, hospitality, internet services, supply chain, transportation, retailing, food service, entertainment, financial services, humanitarian services, and government services. Students examine how service design, capacity planning, and delivery systems differ from manufacturing operations, using case studies to test operations concepts against real organizational problems. Course materials from MIT OpenCourseWare include readings, case assignments, and a syllabus outlining session topics across the range of service industries covered. No certificate is offered, but all lecture notes and assignments are freely available for self-study.
