Mari Carmen España has spent years trying to get her grandfather's remains out of a mass grave in Puebla de Cazalla, Andalucía, where he was buried after being killed during the Franco regime. Two Swedish journalists follow her fight as a road movie, driving through Spain to understand how the country has and has not dealt with its dictatorship. They film España pressing local officials and courts for an exhumation, and set her private campaign against the public commemoration of the other side: daily masses still held for Franco and his generals at the Valle de los Caídos while victims like her grandfather remain in unmarked ground. The film places their journey against Judge Baltasar Garzón's move to formally investigate the regime's forced disappearances, and recalls Olof Palme's 1975 description of Franco's generals as killers awaiting a harsh verdict. The camera stays close to España herself, tracking one family's decades-long wait for a body to bury rather than the wider legal or political machinery around it.
