Meet Mr. Toilet: Jack Sim

2012 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Jack Sim built a fortune in Singapore's construction industry, then walked away to spend his money and reputation on toilets. The film follows his campaign as founder of the World Toilet Organization, tracking how a lack of basic sanitation leaves an estimated 2.6 billion people exposed to waste that spreads disease and kills children before they reach school age. Sim treats the subject with deliberate humor, cracking jokes about poop and turning a taboo topic into something people will actually talk about, while the film cuts to villages and clinics where the stakes are plainly not funny. Interviews and footage from the communities he works with show what changes when a household gets its first working toilet: fewer infections, fewer deaths, and a measurable shift in dignity. The film treats sanitation as a business and policy problem as much as a hygiene one, following Sim's pitch to governments and donors that a toilet is one of the most effective public health interventions money can buy.
