Explorer and writer Will Millard spends a year returning to the Korowai, a tribe in the West Papua jungle who built their homes in trees dozens of feet off the ground and only made sustained contact with the outside world in the last four decades. Across three episodes he finds a community already negotiating the modern economy: tribespeople who have learned to charge tourists and film crews for an 'authentic' glimpse of their lifestyle, complete with a price list. He spends time with brothers Haup and Halap, and later with their adopted son August and his wife Amel, who are weighing whether to work with outside film crews at all. On his final two visits Millard tries to see how most Korowai actually live day to day away from staged encounters, and ends up in a genuinely dangerous situation inside the village. The series avoids the usual exoticizing frame, following the same families over repeat visits and letting the tension between tradition, tourism money, and outside pressure play out on camera rather than in voiceover.
