The film follows intensive care physician Uwe Janssens at St. Antonius Hospital in Eschweiler, where doctors, nurses and a hospital chaplain hold regular ethics meetings to weigh whether a critically ill patient should be kept on a ventilator or allowed to die according to their wishes. It also follows the case of Ingrid L., in a coma for three months after cardiac arrest, whose husband fights to have her living will honored so doctors will stop artificial life support. Interviews with medical staff and family members lay out the tension between what patients actually want, what is medically possible, and the financial incentives hospitals have to keep treating the seriously ill.
