The Golden Gate Bridge spans the Golden Gate Strait outside San Francisco, built to survive winds and currents that had already sunk earlier proposals, and engineered as a suspension design flexible enough to move with the forces around it rather than resist them outright. This episode follows the crews now retrofitting the bridge against the earthquake San Francisco has not forgotten: 1906, magnitude estimated near 7.9, still the benchmark the current engineering team designs against. Cameras follow workers fitting seismic dampers to the main cables, engineers explaining how those dampers absorb and dissipate shaking energy before it reaches the deck, and crews welding steel braces onto the towers to keep them from twisting under load. The film also revisits the original construction, when the bridge opened as the longest suspension span in the world, to show how much of today's retrofit is a conversation with decisions made decades earlier. The throughline is maintenance as an ongoing engineering problem, not a one-time achievement: a structure built for 1937's hazards being rebuilt, piece by piece, for the earthquake still to come.
