
Melting Wetlands: How Can Nature Slow Down Climate Change?
Bogs, swamps, and peatlands hold more carbon than all the world's forests combined, and this film follows two research teams tracking what happens when that carbon starts to escape. In the Arctic, Dr. Minna Väliranta of the University of Helsinki's Environmental Research Centre leads fieldwork on melting permafrost peatlands, gathering data from a region where, until now, findings from other parts of the world were simply assumed to apply. Her team measures how thawing ground releases greenhouse gases and accelerates the warming that caused the thaw in the first place.
