Men in the Modeling Business
Hamburg's Model Academy runs a crash course for young men chasing a career on the runway, and this DW film follows them through the basics: posing, working a camera, walking a set. The competition is brutal. Agencies drop hopefuls who fail to make an immediate impression, and the industry wants fresh faces who already have some experience, a contradiction the film lets its subjects wrestle with openly. Claudia Midolo, founder of the Modelwerk agency, explains her strategy of sending serious candidates abroad first, to Turkey, Vietnam, or Mexico, so they can work, earn money, and stay unfamiliar to Western casting directors and clients. Social media followings now factor into bookings as much as looks do. Through interviews with agency staff and the models themselves, plus footage from academy sessions and casting rooms, the film lays out a business built on rejection, timing, and a narrow window before a face stops being new.
