Moldova's Young People at a Crossroads: Between Russia and the EU
Ahead of a September 28 referendum on Moldova's future direction, this DW documentary follows three young people navigating Europe's poorest country, wedged between EU-member Romania and Ukraine. Ana Popa left and came back, now organizing protest bike rides and civil society campaigns in Chișinău. Andrei Morari grew up in Transnistria, the Russia-backed breakaway strip frozen in conflict since 1992, and is barred from returning home after refusing military service; distrustful of politicians, he won't vote and plans to leave the country instead. Veaceslav Sclifos, known locally as DJ Wenzel, is trying to build a techno scene in his shrinking hometown of Criuleni, where young people keep leaving for lack of jobs. Through interviews and footage shot in the capital, in Transnistria's borderlands, and in rural villages emptying out year by year, the film lays out three different answers to the same question: stay and fight, stay and disengage, or go. The vote hangs over all three stories as the moment their choices get tested.
