Gypsy Rose Blanchard grew up in a wheelchair, shaved head, feeding tube, and a long list of diagnoses her mother Dee Dee insisted she had. Neighbors in Springfield, Missouri saw a devoted single mother caring for a dying child; Habitat for Humanity built the family a house, Make-A-Wish sent them to Disney World. The film uses police footage, courtroom interviews, and home video to show what investigators found after Dee Dee was stabbed to death in 2015: a daughter who could walk, eat solid food, and had none of the illnesses she'd been treated for since infancy, and a boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, who held the knife. Director Erin Lee Carr interviews Gypsy Rose herself from prison, along with relatives, detectives, and doctors, piecing together how Munchausen by proxy went undetected for over a decade. The case becomes a portrait of control taken past any medical justification, and of a daughter whose only way out looked, to her, like murder.
