Mongolia sprawls across a landmass roughly three times the size of France, with a horse population that outnumbers its people, and this Globe Trekker episode moves across it from the Gobi Desert to Lake Khuvsgul and the Altai Mountains before landing in the capital, Ulaanbaatar. Cameras follow herders living much as they have since the era of Chinggis Khaan, moving with their livestock across open steppe rather than settling on it. The episode's centerpiece is the Naadam Festival, the country's annual gathering built around wrestling, archery, and horse racing, filmed with crowds, competitors, and the ceremony surrounding each event. Along the way the presenter sits with nomadic families, watching how a household breaks down and rebuilds its ger, and takes in the everyday texture of a place where most of the land has no fences. The result is a straightforward travelogue rather than an analytical film, built to show what the country looks and sounds like rather than to argue a thesis.
