Two journeys stand in for the daily commute in rural China. Twelve-year-old Yu Qiang, of the Lisu people, lives in Qia Ma Ga village along the Nu Jiang River in Yunnan province, where getting to school means navigating steep hillside paths above the water. The second half follows Abduwale, eleven, and his older sister Bubatiman, thirteen, who live in the foothills of the snow mountains in Oytag Town in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region; after lessons, Abduwale helps his father herd sheep across the same terrain the children cross each morning. The camera follows the kids step by step along cliff edges, river crossings, and mountain trails, with interviews from the children and their families filling in what a normal week actually looks like. Rather than treating the danger as spectacle, the film uses each route to show how geography and family circumstance shape childhood in these remote communities, and how getting an education can itself be a small feat of endurance.
