In southwest Madagascar, brothers Francklyn, 13, and Olivier, 14, live in an isolated region battered by drought and locust swarms. Every Sunday they set out on a five-hour walk through sweltering heat to reach a shack beside their school, where they board away from their family until the week ends. The film follows their route on foot, capturing the terrain and the toll it takes on two kids who have no other way to get an education. In Senou, Mali, near Bamako, nine-year-old Olivier and his sisters Marie and Véronique share two aging bikes between three riders. With fighting still going on elsewhere in the country, daily life has hardened around them, and their morning commute becomes a slog through muddy tracks that swallow tires and time. Both segments stay close to the children and their families, using handheld camera work and observational footage rather than narration-heavy exposition to show what reaching a classroom actually costs.
