Two children, two brutal commutes. In the mountains of Kyrgyzstan, 12-year-old Erbol saddles his horse, Bourou, before dawn and rides three hours through ice and wind to reach a school many miles from his family's farm, repeating the trip home each evening. In Siberia's tundra, 7-year-old Stas grows up herding a thousand reindeer with his family, but this year he leaves them for the first time to attend a boarding school hundreds of miles away, a journey that carries him across open, empty plains with no room for error. The film follows both children and their parents through the daily and seasonal logistics of getting an education in places where roads, buses, and sidewalks do not exist. Handheld camera work stays close to the horses, sledges, and snow-packed trails, and the narration lets the distances and temperatures speak for themselves rather than dramatizing them. It is one episode of a series documenting children's school commutes around the world.
