Musicians on Music
Five performers talk about what it actually takes to make music for a living. Sitarist Anoushka Shankar discusses carrying forward a classical Indian tradition while carving her own voice within it. Flamenco guitarist Celino Romero speaks on technique passed down through family. The experimental duo Matmos describe building compositions out of unconventional sound sources, percussionist Steven Schick talks through the physical and mental demands of contemporary percussion repertoire, and jazz flutist Holly Hofmann explains improvisation from the inside. The film moves between these five artists rather than following one thread, using interviews and performance footage to let each musician describe their own process in their own terms. There's no host steering the conversation toward a single thesis; instead the juxtaposition does the work, showing how differently a sitar player, a flamenco guitarist, a jazz flutist, and two experimental composers think about the same basic questions of craft, tradition, and invention.
