My First War

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Yariv Mozer is 28 when he is drafted into the Second Lebanon War, and rather than leave his camera behind he straps it to his rifle with a shoelace and starts filming. The footage that results is not polished war reportage but the record of a reluctant soldier trying to make sense of an operation that keeps changing shape around him, from the initial call-up through firefights and long stretches of confusion about what the unit is actually meant to accomplish. Mozer narrates from the vantage of hindsight, laying his own doubts and fear over combat footage most soldiers never think to shoot, let alone keep. The film follows him back to civilian life afterward, tracing how the weeks in Lebanon sit with him once the uniform comes off. It stays personal throughout, one soldier's account rather than a strategic history of the war, and the shoelace-rigged rifle-camera footage is the reason it exists at all.
