Stacey Dooley returns to Luton, the town where she grew up, after it gained a reputation as a center of extremist activity in Britain. She goes looking for the people behind that label, sitting down with members of groups linked to radical Islamist preaching as well as with the English Defence League, the far-right movement founded in Luton partly in reaction to them. Dooley walks the streets she knew as a teenager, now marked by tension between neighbors who used to get along, and asks residents on both sides how a fairly ordinary commuter town became a flashpoint. She presses her subjects on what they actually believe, rather than what they are accused of believing, and lets the contradictions in their answers sit uncomfortably on screen. The film stays close to Dooley's own outsider-insider position, someone who left and came back to find her hometown used as shorthand for a national argument about integration and extremism.
