The Eagle Nebula, one of the richest star nurseries in the Milky Way, opens this film as a case study in cosmic violence and creation at once: intense stellar winds have carved its gas into towering pillars where new stars are still forming. The film then follows what happens to the stars that die making this possible, tracing the supernovae that leave behind neutron stars and their far stranger relatives, black holes. Using data and imagery from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Hubble Space Telescope, it walks through how astronomers actually detect and measure these objects, from stellar-mass black holes to the supermassive kind anchoring entire galaxies. A central sequence explains accretion disks, matter heated to millions of degrees as it spirals toward the event horizon, and how that process powers quasars and active galactic nuclei, some of the brightest sustained objects in the universe. The film closes on what remains unresolved: what happens at the event horizon, and what, if anything, a singularity actually is.
