Narco-song of Sinaloa

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

RT Documentary travels to Culiacan, capital of Sinaloa state and long the seat of Mexico's most powerful drug cartel, to look at narcocorridos, the ballads that celebrate cartel bosses and their exploits. Cameras follow musicians who write and perform these songs for hire, capturing rehearsals, live sets, and interviews about what it means to make a living singing about traffickers some listeners fear and others idolize. Local residents describe how the genre has become part of everyday culture in Culiacan, playing on the radio and at parties despite periodic government bans. The film sets this music against the backdrop of ongoing cartel violence in the region, showing how the songs work as both entertainment and a kind of folk record of the drug trade's power. It is less a true-crime investigation than a portrait of a subculture, letting the singers and their audiences explain why the corridos keep getting written even as the killings they describe continue.
