NASA's Curiosity rover drills into a patch of Martian bedrock at Yellowknife Bay, inside Gale Crater, and finds the first hard evidence that Mars once had conditions suitable for microbial life. The film walks through what the rover's instruments detected: clay minerals, sulfur, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and carbon, the same chemical ingredients life needs on Earth, sitting in rock that formed in what scientists conclude was a freshwater lake environment billions of years ago. Mission scientists explain how they read the rock layers and mineral composition to reconstruct that ancient lakebed, and how the finding shifts the mission's question from whether Mars could have supported life to how much of the planet once could have. Animations and real rover imagery show the drilling process and the crater terrain, grounding the science in the actual hardware and landscape involved. It is a compact account of the discovery that reframed Curiosity's entire mission on Mars.
