Ted Southern and Nik Moiseev are trying to do with two people what NASA once needed whole teams to accomplish: build a working space suit. Southern trained as a sculptor at Pratt Institute and cut his teeth in a Manhattan costume shop; Moiseev spent over twenty years engineering pressure garments in the Soviet Union and Russia. The film follows their partnership from its start in 2007 through NASA's Centennial Challenge, where their five-fingered glove design took second place in a competition that had defeated other entrants, and traces how that result turned into a $100,000 NASA grant and their company, Final Frontier Design. Along the way it shows how space suits actually work, not as clothing but as sealed, pressurized environments built from layered fabric, joints, and hardware, and sketches the shift from the rigid, armor-like suits of early spaceflight to the softer, more flexible designs astronauts wear now. Interviews with the two men and footage of their prototypes carry most of the story.
